A really nice place that is worth a visit
Pros: Friendly staff. Lively place. Nice surroundings. Good draft selections.
Cons: Parking. Wish they would serve food later at night. Can get very crowded, but not crazy-crowded.
"Hibernia is a great place to visit whenever I am downtown.
Yes, it can get a little crazy in there on student nights, but that also lends to its liveliness.
I usually go on Thursday nights for the karaoke show. It does get started kind of late for a 'school night' but the crowd doesn't seem to care and neither do I.
Atmosphere is excellent. They did a great job with the renovations in the place. Nice big bar with lots of draft taps and a good variety of brews.
My only complaint really is that they stop serving food way too early, considering that it doesn't really get going in there until after 11 PM. It's mostly bar food, but good bar food.
What else? I haven't been yet, but I hear they have traditional Irish music on Sunday afternoons. Sounds like a nice way to spend the afternoon and there isn't usually much else, music-wise, going on in town at that time.
Parking, well, it's downtown parking. Find a meter or park in Elm St or the Customs House lot.
Also, not sure how it is on slower nights, but it can get very busy in there the nights I go. My suggestion is to arrive early and stake out your claim at the bar.
All of the staff are friendly and on top of things, but there's only so much they can do with 50 people wanting service at the same time. Get to know them and tip well. (on second thought, they will still take good care of you regardless of the tips, but why be cheap?) They'll take care of you (good advice in any busy place).
Overall, I give Hibernia 4 stars for location, beautiful surroundings and a fun time.
Lots of activity on Thurs, Fri and Sat nights, after 10:30-11:00.
Mostly a college aged crowd but older folks like me can blend in well too, unless they are one of those fools who think they are actually going to try to date the 20-somethings. C'mon guys. Get real. You know who you are.
Also, they have live music on AHA nights, earlier.
Sunday afternoons? Well, I'll have to stop in some time to see. Sounds like fun, though, and probably a less youthful crowd."
